Lucky me! I won a contest for a behind-the-scenes VIP tour of Specialized Bicycle Components Morgan Hill, CA campus. Specialized is one of the biggest names in bicycles, so this was exciting. It was an opportunity to see how new products are developed…an inside look at how great ideas become those wonderful machines.

This was no ordinary tour. It started with the Founder, Mike Sinyard and longtime employee, World Cup Champion, and Mountain Bike Hall of Famer, Ned Overend giving a welcome and providing a brief history of the company.

The staff was extremely friendly and gracious, right down to the snacks and beverages available throughout the facility for our group of contest winners.

This tour was not just a quick look around. Every department that we visited had subject matter experts, engineers and designers, ready and waiting to give us detailed explanations of their processes.

Throughout the facility, and especially in the museum, there was a myriad of unique bikes to check out. It was really amazing to see all of the concept bikes and funny ideas that have happened over the years.

One thing that really stood out with me is the passion that these employees have for the brand and for cycling in general. Nowhere was this more evident than the space where they store their bikes for lunchtime rides. When the time came, they were out the door. What a great company to work for!

I have a new respect for this company and would recommend any cycling enthusiast that has an opportunity to visit this campus to do so. It will be an unforgettable experience.
